Matt Sampson hits winning form in Spain
Matt Sampson jumped straight to the top on day one in Vejer de la Frontera, Spain, to score a victory double.
Matt took the win in the world ranking 3* 1.45m on Curraghgraigue Obos Flight. Thirty-seven contended this speed class with Matt and the Obos Quality/Errigal Flight eight-year-old winning by 0.91 sec. Anthony Condon was 1.66 sec in arrears for sixth on SFS Vincomte and Charlie Jones slotted Dexter into ninth. Steadier clears from Kayleigh Watts on Kilbarron Rue and James Wilson with Galway Bay Jed finished 12th and 13th.
Matt also topped the 17-strong seven-year-old two-phase over a 1.30/1.35m track, easing Jafabalou (Balou Du Rouet/Concorde) ahead by 0.33 sec over Anthony and SFS Mirage. Charlie guided Vins VD Tojopehoeve into fifth with Charlotte Geddes in seventh on Captain Morgan 35 and Billy Twomey also returned a double clear for ninth aboard Je T’Aime Z.
Kayleigh netted two of the top five places in the 42-strong 1.30m speed, winning by 1.38 sec on the Quadrillo 13-year-old Harley and taking fifth aboard Be Cool Harry.
A steady clear in the 53-entry 1.35m speed put Kayleigh and Ninkie De Vy Z into 12th 13 sec behind the winner. Charlie also returned home clear for 19th on Crocus La Sillardiere.
Guy Williams got Hubside Jumping in St Tropez, France, with second place in the 4* 1.45m on Rouge De Ravel.
Thirty-five contended this world-ranking speed class with Guy and the Ultimo Van Ter Moude 15-year-old slotting into the runner-up spot 2.59 sec behind the winner, Italy’s Emanuele Gaudiano on Carlotta 232. Harry Charles also posted a clear on Valkiry De Zance for eighth place.
Guy jumped an easy clear in the 52-strong 2* 1.30m speed to take 12th on Crispina Z almost five sec behind the pace.
And Harry posted a steady double clear in the 52-horse 4* 1.40m two-phase to take 19th on Exexel.
Laura Renwick jumped into fourth in the 1.40m grand prix qualifier in Peelbergen, The Netherlands, with the home-bred Arkuga.
Seventy-five came forward in this speed class with Laura and the Arko/Heartbreaker nine-year-old finishing 2.50 sec behind the winner, Brazil’s Francisco Mesquita Musa on Catch Me Emporio Egipcio.
Lucinda Roche slotted Izar LB into second in the 66-strong 1.35m two-phase, the 11-year-old mare finishing 0.32 sec off the winning time. Trevor Breen eased Highland President into seventh and Alex Barr finished 11th on Havall.
Brits filled the top three places in the 50-entry five and six-year-old 1.10/1.20m two-phase with Sophie Fawcett leading the way by 0.21 sec on the six-year-old mare Halida’s Whisper (Whisper In The Wind/Baloubet Du Rouet). Laura had to settle for second and third on the six-year-olds Cottee (Asterix E Z/Couleur Rubin) and Jolita L (Ustinov/Nabab De Reve). Jamie Gornall returned a clean sheet to take 15th on Conco-Blue PS.
Sophie steered Calson (Casall/Clarimo) into fifth in the 36-horse seven-year-old 1.30m two-phase 3.38 sec behind the pace. Steady double clears from Alex on Imperial HBF and Jamie Gornall aboard Melina Blue PS finished 16th and 19th.
Laura gave Bintang II a run out in the 65-entry 1.40m two-phase to take 12th 4.36 sec behind the winner, The Netherlands’ Leon Thijssen with Carinja 18.
Arabella Prior finished on clear and four in the 32-strong 1.10m two-phase to take 10th with Hot Blue.
Lance Whitehouse posted the steadiest of the double clears in the 55-horse 1.20m two-phase to take 14th on Iomie.
In Bonheiden, Belgium, Emma Stoker netted fourth in the 31-entry seven-year-old 1.30m two-phase with Nikka VD Bisschop 0.66 sec behind the pace.
Anneliese Prag guided Con Man TW into seventh in the 31-horse six-year-old 1.20m two-phase seven sec off the pace. Nick Benterman was double clear for 10th on Jelsina HX and Tamarin Christie came home on clear and four to take 15th with Janita.
Nick posted the steadiest of the double clears in the 24-strong five-year-old 1.10m two-phase to take 13th on Kevin.
Ellie Guy steered Ard Cluedo into 11th in the 1* 1.20m two-phase 4.60 sec off the pace. Nick also returned a clean sheet for 16th on Arie Z.
Domenique Bonelli claimed fifth in the 18-horse 1.05/1.10m two-phase with a double clear 3.31 sec off the pace on New Blue.
John Whitaker slotted Sharid into fifth in the 66-strong 2* 1.40m speed at Macon Chaintre in France, 3.35 sec off the pace.
John returned a double clear in the 93-horse 1* 1.30m for 16th on the home-bred Argento son Arge.
