Amanda Derbyshire lands the Great Lakes grand prix
Amanda Derbyshire turned in the best performance of the day to take the $72,900 2* grand prix with Luibanta BH at the Great Lakes Equestrian Festival at Traverse City Horse Shows, USA.
Brazil’s course-designer Anderson Lima set a 16-effort track with 14 returning to the jump-off after posting first round clears. Ireland’s Capt Brian Cournane was first out of the gates and set a sizzling standard with Penelope Cruz, and grimly hung on to his lead despite the challenges.
However, Amanda and the on-form Luibanta – second in the previous week’s grand prix – set off with determination and the plan came off, the Luidam year-old flying into the top spot to win with 1.81 sec in hand.
“Brian was fast but as last to go I had the best advantage and gave it my all and Lulu tried her best as she always does,” said Amanda, who had planned her jump-off route meticulously.
“Brian did 10 strides across the middle and I took one out to take nine. I planned it so I knew that was where I could be a little faster and it felt like I was pretty fast back to the double as well. Lulu is such a fast horse, she’s quick across the ground – always an advantage in a big jump-off like that.”
Amanda was impressed with the show.
“Everyone has had a great time, and the town is beautiful. The horse show has done an amazing job. It’s probably the closest to a European venue that you can get and I know our whole farm has had a really nice time. Mimi [Gochman] was third in the grand prix and Sophie [Gochman] had ribbons in both grand prix classes, so we go home very happy!”
