Holly Smith and Howard Ephgrave take victory in Vilamoura
Holly Smith galloped to victory in Wednesday’s seven-year-old with Dakota in Vilamoura, Portugal.
The 26 starters were reduced to 11 for the jump-off over a 1.35m track with Holly and the Denver V/Rex Z gelding flying into the top spot by 1.08 sec. Louise Simpson eased the Don VHP Z daughter Donna Pascale into third 1.90 sec in arrears and Holly also finished ninth on clear and four with History.
Louise was best Brit in Tuesday’s 26-horse seven-year-old speed with seventh on Donna Pascale 9.50 sec off the pace. Holly Smith on Dakota and James Smith with HBF-Delmar also posted steady clears for eighth and ninth places.
Howard Ephgrave jumped to the top on Jayley in the five-year-old on day one of week four.
Eighteen contended this speed class over a 1.10m track with Howard and the Don Diablo HX/Phin Phin daughter winning by an impressive 4.53 sec. Turkey’s Omar Karaeveli had to settle for second and third on Jacky Chan and Obabelute-M. Steady clears from Jasmine Cain on Nieshe Van Berkenbroeck and Jude Burgess with Onessa Van’t Krekenhof claimed eighth and ninth.
Howard and Jayley finished third in Wednesday’s five-year-old 1.10m two-phase 1.38 sec behind the pace. Jasmine with Nieshe and Jude’s Onessa both returned on four in the second phase for 10th and 11th.
Nicole Lockhead Anderson guided Azolette into fifth in Tuesday’s 31-strong six-year-old 1.25m speed, the Commisaris/Concorde mare finishing 4.62 sec behind the winner. Steady rounds from Charlene Bastone on Dorien 55 and Graham Gillespie’s Senators Rhondaigo returned on two time faults apiece to take 14th and 15th.
Nicole upped a gear on Wednesday to take second in the 32-strong six-year-old, Azolette 0.76 sec behind the winning time in the 19-horse decider. Charlene was also double clear on Dorien to finish eighth.
Ellie Burrell-Squibb netted second and fifth in the 1.25m speed with the Haarlem 15-year-old Jordan Girl Z in the runner-up spot 1.19 sec off the pace and Zaronda II filled the lower place.
