Glain Watkin Jones threw everything into winning the pony Foxhunter title with Trevor H and secured victory by 0.90 sec in a hot jump-off with a final gallop to the last oxer.
“He is really quick and I have to keep him on a forward stride anyway. He’s not a typical jumping pony but he’s got a heart of gold and tries every time,” said Gwynedd, Wales based Glain, who was making her HOYS debut and admitted to being nervous beforehand.
Ten of the 28 starters reached the jump-off, including newly-crowned newcomers champions Daisy Williams on Bermudez BDA and 2018 defencing champion Holly Cooper with Valentino Supreme, but none were a match for Glain.
The eight-year-old Trevor (Timesquare/Corrado II) was imported from Germany by the late Ken Pritchard and joined Glain 12 months ago.
“He was very green and at first we didn’t get on, I had to really work hard with him but now he literally lights up in the ring and loves to win,” said Glan, 16, who will now hand the ride over to younger brother Dafydd.
Izzy Goddard was the nearest rival and rode Strawberry Rojo into second with Lila Bremner making her final ride on Lapislazuli a good one with third place. Tatiane Mauree – second in the pony showjumper – claimed fourth on Horseabout Zibu ahead of Daisy and Bermudez in fifth and Aimee Jones filled sixth spot on Wot’s Up Dot.
