Paul Barker seizes victory in a final round dash

Paul Barker used his final draw to maximum effect in the big tour 1.45m to deny Louise Saywell a victory double on the middle day of the British Masters 2* at Wettenhall International.

Twenty-nine started over this two-phase track designed by Raf Suarez and it was who dares wins with twists and sharp turns a must.  And Paul dared, flying ahead on Van Gogh 11-year-old Dalton W to wipe 0.66 sec off long-time leader Louise’s time with Old Lodge’s Sharp Image.

Faye Adams secured third spot with Demograaf ahead of Mille Allen’s Quinu de Pravia in fourth.  Jamie Wingrove slotted Genesis HB into fifth and Mark Armstrong’s Fabienne finished sixth.

Louise topped the small tour 1.30m two-phase in flying style aboard Jane Heerbeck’s C Indoctro/Gran Corrado 12-year-old Carolus K DHI.  Keith Shore had led most of the way following an early round on Pat Morris’s 10-year-old Checkmate Z but Louise found a slightly shorter route on the feisty Carolus to claim a 0.34 sec win.

Corrine Collins collected third on Dolores P, Laura Johnson brought Euphoria HST into fourth with Adam Ellery’s Fairway in fifth and Paul Barker filling sixth spot on Crispina Z.

Nathan Bull pulled it out of the bag in the medium tour 1.40m accumulator on Janice, a nine-year-old Kannan daughter he has ridden for seven weeks.  Thirty-eight contended this class but Nathan outpaced them all and claimed a 0.49 sec advantage over Nicole Pavitt in second on Gemmarco 16.

Max Routledge steered Sandro’s Boy Z into third ahead of Millie on Chantal in fourth while Sandy McLean (Gino F) and Sarah Billington (Uforia JX) settled for fifth and sixth.

Vicky Lovegrove raced to the top in the amateur 1.20m two-phase with Codean, winning the 21-horse class by an impressive 1.80 sec.  Iwan Carpenter guided Merllyn’s Chacco B into second just ahead of Sarah Winterbottom’s Gordulane in third.  Georgia Cabb claimed fourth on Uragan, Abbie Bevan finished fifth on Halicant Jo-R and Izzy Watson took sixth with Luxalike.

The Barker family added another win to their tally as Paul’s niece Hannah Barker returned triumphant in the amateur 1.10m two-phase aboard Cartouche II with 1.11 sec in hand.  Madison McCrory finished second on Wynton D ahead of Angela Eardley’s Forrella TS in third and fourth-placed Grace Wallace on Ecarentina.  Chloe Scott took fifth with Invisible Power N and Rachel Lees rode Candle Line into sixth.
