It's Happy Hour! Paul Barker takes a second win in Balmoral
Paul Barker maintained his winning form with Sovereign Equestrian’s Happy Boy to take another win at Balmoral Show, just 24 hours after their first win.
Twenty-nine tackled the Aon Risk Services 1.40m accumulator with Joker with Paul setting off at the gallop on the Kannan 12-year-old, attacking the course with gusto to win by 0.53 sec. James Smith made it a British one-two, taking second on Simply Splendid and added to his results over the three days it earned James leading rider of the show. British-based Irishman Eoin Gallagher secured third spot with Flugel M.
Nigel Coupe also scored a maximum for eighth on Mystic Independence and Louise Saywell dropped five points to take 12th on Golden Arrow.
Two British riders reached the jump-off of the Bottle Green and Horse Sport Ireland grand prix but lowered rails got in the way in round two to drop them down the order. Simon Buckley was best Brit in the seven-horse decider with sixth place on four faults on the Wizzerd 10-year-old Elia and 11 faults put Nigel and Balzac into seventh.
Ireland’s Greg Broderick took the win on Charly Chaplin S with The USA’s Julie Welles in second aboard Ambra – a 10-year-old previously ridden by Michael Whitaker. Stacey Babes was denied a jump-off chance by one time fault and took ninth with Castlefield while others made just one mistake; Eoin was fastest four-faulter on Di Caprio for 10th with James (Twix De La Roque), Millie Allen (Quinu De Pravia) and Keith Shore (Mystic Hurricane) in 11th, 12th and 14th.
Donny Janciauskas jumped into fourth in the seven-year-old with Cool Quarz in Lier, Belgium. Sixty-one contended this two-phase class with British-based Donny riding for Lithuania posting a double clear on Cool Quarz (Quarz/Cassini I) to finish 0.91 sec behind the winner. James Billington jumped two steady rounds to take 21st on Harwich VDL.
Joe Clee eased Lafayette Van Overis into eighth with a double clear in the 69-strong 2* 1.40m two-phase section B 3.52 sec behind the pace. Donny was also penalty-free and rode Cool Scendy into 10th.
Joe was also placed in the 1.40m section A to take 17th with a steady double clear on Alzu Ohio.
Bumble Thomas claimed third in the initial 1.35m speed on Ciandro in Sancourt, France. Sixty-three contended this class with Bumble and the Carthino Z 12-year-old 3.40 sec behind the winner. Zak Beesley took a steady option on Diaralda P for 11th place.
Zak jumped into sixth in Friday’s 1.35m two-phase with Ultima, the Casall 15-year-old finishing 1.32 sec behind the pace. Declan Irvine rode Hanleen Beatrice into ninth with Bumble on Aramis in 12th and Zak was also clear on second ride Diralda P for 18th.
Paul Bevan jumped an easy clear on Deangelo II to take eighth in the 64-strong 1.40m speed on day one, finishing more than five sec behind the pace. Four faults dropped Bumble and Aramis down to 20th.
And Paul with the consistent Deangelo again took eighth in the 1.40m on day two. Seventeen of the 71 starters with Paul providing the steadiest of the double clears on the Tangelo Van De Zuuthoeve 11-year-old to finish nine sec behind the winner, France’s Jeremy Le Roy on Razzia Des Sables.
Declan Irvine guided Dragon into ninth in the 63-entry 1.30m speed three sec off the pace. And Declan claimed sixth in the 45-horse 1* 1.20m speed with the nine-year-old Bishopstons Utah 4.67 sec off the pace.
