Paul Barker outpaced all in the 1.35m speed challenge with Sovereign Equestrian’s Happy Boy on day two at the popular Balmoral show in Northern Ireland.
Twenty-six contended this table C speed (four sec added for a knockdown) with Paul attacking the course in his usual style on the Kannan 12-year-old to win by 0.49 sec.
Ireland’s Sven Hadley slotted Sumas Taloubet into second with Kerry Brennan in third on the effusive 16-year-old Wellington M just 0.03 sec in arrears.
Jonathan Dixon on Fireball and Geoff Billington with Corvette Van Overis Z finished in 10th and 11th places.
Keith Shore was the best Brit in the Connollys Red Mills 1.45m with fourth place on Iron Lady Van T Meulenhof. Eleven of the 30 starters reached the jump-off with Ireland filling the top three places, Dermott Lennon taking the win by 1.17 sec on Gelvins Touch. Jessica Burke guided Express Trend into second with British-based Irishman Eoin Gallagher in third aboard the Cornet Obolensky nine-year-old Flugel M.
Keith slotted the Parco 11-year-old Iron Lady into fourth while James Smith posted the fastest time, quicker than the winner by 0.10 sec – but a crucial rail fell and dropped Simply Splendid to sixth. Eight faults in the jump-off put Paul and Dalton W into 11th and Sarah Billington took 12th with one frustrating time fault in round one on Uforia JX.
