Annabel Shields got Lier, Belgium, off to a flying start with a double victory on Wednesday in the 2* 1.40m grand prix qualifier and five and six-year-old.
The eager and consistent Carnoneybridge Challenger forged ahead in the 1.40m speed section A for Annabel, the Hermes De Reve/Burggraaf 10-year-old topping the mammoth 113-strong class with an impressive 2.04 sec to spare. Other Brits were also clear to pick up money – William Whitaker guided the Beach Ball 10-year-old Lammy Beach into seventh with Joe Clayton in 12th on Crak De Beaurepaire Z, Jay Buxton was 14th on High Offley Arturos Catch and Jamie Wingrove finished 17th with Bart VI.
Annabel topped the five and six-year-old on Cartender. A huge entry of 92 contended this two-phase btut Annabel had all the shortcuts to hand, winning by 0.71 sec on the Cartoon/Nintender six-year-old. Charlotte Arnold made it a British one-two with the runner-up spot on the six-year-old Plot Blue/Voltaire mare Leestone Blue Voltet and steady double clears from Joanne Whitaker (It’s Popcorn) and Leonie Aitkenhead (Prosperous K) finished 22nd and 24th.
A hugely popular show, the 1.40m had to be split and another 111 competitors tackled section B, Millie Allen taking seventh on the Action Breaker nine-year-old Quinu De Pravia 2.59 sec off the pace. Steadier rounds from Graham Gillespie (Calvaro’s Up To Date) and Robert Murphy (Chablis) earned 23rd and 26th.
