Guy Williams jumped all five rounds of the Puissance clear on the Chacco Blue nine-year-old Mr Blue Sky UK in Rouen, France. But he had to share the spoils with France’s Mathieu Billot on Dassler – a big-jumping Douglas 10-year-old with previous Puissance form in Britain with Louise Saywell in the saddle.
Eight initially contended the big wall but Guy and Mathieu were the only two left in the final round, and both jumped clear again over 2.21m (7ft 3in).
A rail down in the 1.40m table C speed added four sec to Guy’s time and dropped him to 10th on the 10-year-old Kashmir Van Schuttershof stallion Igor Van De Dorpshoeve.
In Suttgart, Germany, Billy Twomey clinched third spot in the speed and handiness 1.45m on the Irish-bred 14-year-old stallion Ardcolum Duke 0.84 sec behind the winner, Germany’s Felix Hassmann on SL Brazonado.
Fellow British-based Irishman Michael Duffy finished sixth in the 1.55m with Casis. Eleven of the 43 starters gained access to round two with Michael posting another clear on the Cassus/Graf Top 11-year-old 2.12 sec behind the winner, Switzerland’s Steve Guerdat on Venard De Cerisy. Billy was one of six on one time fault in round one to take 15th on Lady Lou.
Nicole Lockhead Anderson claimed second in the FEI Ponies’ Trophy with Gangnam Style. Ten of the 21 starters contended the jump-off with Nicole and the Irish nine-year-old Gangnam Style finishing 1.72 sec behind the winner, Ireland’s Max Wachman and Cuffesgrange Cavalidam.
Red Morgan left all the fences intact but picked up one time fault in round one on Bodyssee Des Avelines for 12th and Shaunie Greig returned four faults with Granouche to take 14th.
