Guy Williams races to a win in Bethune
Fresh from his victory at Royal Windsor Guy Williams outpaced all to take the top-billed 1.50m in Bethune, France, on Rouge De Ravel.
A tough track reduced the 62 starters to just six with two Brits still in the mix. But speed king Guy had the upper hand all the way on the 13-year-old Ultimo Van Ter Moude stallion to take the win with 2.28 sec in hand.
Joe Clayton steadied after picking up eight faults on the Via Veneto/Landadel 12-year-old Via VD Karmenhoek Z and settled for fifth spot. Several made just one mistake in round one, including Anthony Condon on SFS Aristio in 12th, Louise Simpson in 13th on First Colt, Kirstie Leightley aboard Thais D’La Verrerie in 15th and 18th placed Ellen Whitaker on Arena UK Winston.
Joe jumped to the top with a flying round on Jane Heerbeck’s Carolus K DHI in the 3* 1.35m.
Eighty-three contended this speed class but Joe set off with a flyer and maintained a relentless pace on the Indoctro/Gran Corrado 11-year-old to claim the top spot by 1.90 sec. Laura Renwick guided Sharon Whiteway’s 13-year-old VDL Groep Alitta (Karandasj/Indoctro) into third with Kayleigh Watts in eighth place on Fashion V. Nicole Pavitt filled ninth spot on Victor Blue and Alex Rident claimed 12th place with Come Back.
Laura was on-form in the 51-horse seven-year-old, taking the top two places. She topped this speed class with her home-bred Arkuga – by Arko and out of her Heartbreaker speed mare Beluga – and slotted Sharon Whiteway’s Novita Jovial Z Nabab De Reve/Carthago Z) into second, 1.37 sec splitting the two. Georgia Tame eased the Coltaire Z mare Z7 Caretina into fourth just ahead of her boss Shane Breen, fifth on Z7 Ascot (Non Stop/Voltaire).
