James Smith rode Just Max into second in the 2* 1.45m at Sentower Park in Opglabbeek, Belgium.
Nine of the original 29 starters reached round two with James guiding the Berlin/Casco nine-year-old Max into the runner-up spot 2.63 sec behind the pace. Belgium’s Jens Vandenberk took victory on Contiki. Annabel Shields was also in the mix but four faults dropped the Zenith eight-year-old Rubin VHS to seventh.
A steady clear eight sec off the pace put Annabel and Cartender into 10th in the six-year-old speed.
Paul Kennedy netted third in the 1.30m speed with Isaura Van De Marquette, the British-based Irishman finishing 0.93 sec behind the pace on the Thunder Van De Zuuthoeve 10-year-old. Alex Thompson guided the eight-year-old Classy Cat JT Z (Clarimo/Heartbreaker) into sixth spot with Jonathan Dixon in seventh place on Gogobantos.
Victoria Delville-Cutts jumped into fourth in the 37-horse 1* 1.10m speed on Just Olympia, the Ugano Sitte nine-year-old finishing more than five sec behind the pace. Abigail Hall claimed seventh on Empress and Melissa Eagles took 10th aboard Gietvot B. One time faults put Alex Thompson and Caselena into 15th.
Four faults dropped John Daker and Heartbreaker 11-year-old Credit Card to 13th in the 2* 1.40m speed. Graham Gillespie also made one mistake for 17th on Kylian Van De Noordheuvel.
John also took 10th in the 58-strong 1* 1.25m with the Heartbreaker nine-year-old Sweet Candy. Dominic Webb slotted Fennacara into 14th.
