Michael Whitaker hit form on the final day of the Zurich 5* meeting, featuring in both the FEI world cup qualifier and initial 1.50m.
Fourteen of the 39 riders in the world cup produced first round clears and eight provided further clears to make it all about the clock in the jump-off. Michael slotted JB’s Hot Stuff into fourth, the Locarno 62 12-year-old finishing a little more than two sec behind the winner, Sweden’s Stephanie Holmen on Flip’s Little Sparrow. Switzerland’s Pius Schwizer eased About A Dream into second, 1.11 sec in arrears with France’s Kevin staut ad Silver Deux De Virton HDC in third.
Michael also claimed second in the morning’s 1.50m class, the promising Carthago Z nine-year-old Valmy De La Lande taking the runner-up spot in the eight-horse decider 0.81 sec behind the pace. Sweden’s Peder Fredricson took the win on Hansson WI.
Four faults in the second phase of Saturday’s 1.50m dropped Michael Whitaker and Flawless down to 14th place. France’s Kevin Staut and Ayide De Septon et HDC took the win over The Netherlands’ Harrie Smolders on Cas.
Pius Schwizer made a popular home win for Switzerland in the Knockout with Electric Z beating his fellow countryman Niklaus Rutschi on Piplotta in an exciting competition.
