Joe Clayton clicks with new ride Caruso in Lier

November 3, 2017

Joe Clayton has quickly established a partnership with new ride Caruso 472 and jumped into second place in the 1.40m speed on day one in Lier, Belgium.

Sixty-two tackled this grand prix qualifier with Joe opting not to rush the Cornet Obolensky/Primero 11-year-old – a former ride of Britain’s James Shore, Norway’s Geir Gulliksen, Belgium’s Jos Verlooy and Germany’s Christian Ahlmann.  The pair finished 4.60 sec behind the winner, Belgium’s Geoffrey Cobbaut on ID1.

“A great start to the week with a horse I’ve ridden for just the past week,” said a delighted Joe.

Scott Brash posted a very steady clear with Hello Mr President for 18th and William Whitaker returned on one time faults with Furmint.

Such was the mammoth entry, the 1.40m was split into two sections with William easing Ilusionata Van’t Meulenhof into seventh in the second section, the Lord Z/Carthago nine-year-old mare finishing more than five sec behind the pace.

Ireland’s Shane O’Reilly riding Uno Du Thot for Oakingham Stud finished 13th and Joe brought another new ride, the eight-year-old Jeff Ten Halven, into 15th.

Anthony Condon and Zira VH Kapelhof Z and Scott Brash with Hello Shelby both returned on one time fault to finish down the order.

Anthony Condon guided Guadelupe into fifth in the five and six-year-old two-phase, the Zambesi/Papillon Rouge six-year-old finishing 1.79 sec behind the pace.  Scott Brash eased Hello Franklin – the Billy Mexico six-year-old bought recently from Emma McGlynn – into eighth and Shane O’Reilly was also double clear on the six-year-old mare Birdy Du Thot (Magic D’Elle/Le Tot De Semilly) for 12th.

Roger McCrea posted a double clear for eighth in the seven-year-old two-phase, the Diamant De Semilly/Carthago Z stallion Davinci VD Bosrand Z finishing nine sec behind the winner.  Four faults in the second phase put Ashlee Harrison and Atout Des Trambles into 15th.

Clare Reynolds returned with an easy clear in the 1.30m speed on the Cantos 12-year-old Dollards Abu Dhabi CJS to finish more than 10 sec behind the pace.  Ashlee took 16th on Felicite and Shane was also clear on Elvira for 17th.
