Keith Doyle maintains his area trial record at Henley
Ten days after heading the Edenbridge and Oxted area trial, Keith Doyle and Darren Hegarty’s consistent Harlequin Dunraven claimed their second area trial win at Henley.
“He’s come into his own this year,” said Keith, who used his final round to maximum effect.
Twenty-nine initially tackled Phil Ashworth’s 12-fence track and 11 found all the answers in round one to make a crowd-thrilling jump-off, Keith providing the classic ending in the final draw to win by half a sec.
Keith took over the ride on this Irish-bred gelding from owner Darren – who lives in the same village – at newcomer level three years ago and has taken the former eventer steadily through the grades.
“I’m so proud, I’ve had him from a three-year-old,” said Darren, who keeps the Ard VDL Douglas 11-year-old fit at home with Keith just riding him at shows.
Mid-way leader Mennell Watson so nearly made it another victory for Helen van Heyningen’s home-bred Coretti nine-year-old Whisper In The Wind but had to settle for second. Helen Tredwell’s early clear on Ann and Colin Garrett’s Sebastian VII took third with Robert Bevis in fourth on Laura Kraut’s Deville. Abbe Elliott (nee Burchmore Eames) took fifth with the final double clear on Booming Blue Z and the final planks fell for Ben Walker, dropping Roulette H from second to sixth.
John Crippen topped the accumulator with Patricia Brown’s Numero Uno 10-year-old Content, galloping ahead to win with 10 sec to spare. Only five posted maximum scores, the Joker catching the majority of the 23 starters. Dale Burnham rode the seven-year-old Gigolo into second and also claimed fifth on Romanella Gold. Phillip Miller rode Kimba Classic into third and Robert Bevis picked up fourth on Chablis ET.
John doubled up in the newcomers with the Campbell VDL six-year-old Galant IV, relegating Sarah Hayward on Cartoon Time into second place.
Tim Page headed the 1.30m with the six-year-old Casanova 499 during a heavy shower and also picked up third with Doonaveeragh Victor, sandwiching Abbe Elliott into second on Casti Aneira in an eight-strong jump-off.
Tim and Casanova also finished second in the Foxhunter/grade C in a four-strong decider, conceding victory to Alfie Bradstock on Leamore Hightale. Laura Mantel was also double clear for third on Lady Caretino with Liz Millard fourth aboard Cindy VII.
Tila Winstone claimed victory in the 1.15m on the Lupicor/Volatire 13-year-old Zahiro Uit T Veld with Abbe second on the Zapatero VDL eight-year-old Eleonora III and Holly Howsam third aboard Esprit VD Donlehoeve.
Abbe topped the discovery on the Clinton/Chin Chin five-year-old Celtic Dream PSS Z with Maya Northway Young in second on Ziamara, while Andy Austin won the 1m with the Zicaloma five-year-old Hamilton Loma.
