It was a good day for Brits and British-based riders in Gijon, Spain, with British-based Aussie Rowan Willis claiming a magnificent double.
In the 5* 1.50m speed, British-based riders filled four of the top five places. Rowan and his consistent winner Blue Movie again pulled it out of the bag to top the 52-strong speed.
The Chacco Blue/Pilot 11-year-old has given Rowan some of his biggest wins of late, including the recent 4* grand prix in Samorin and Bratislava’s 3* grand prix, and here was no exception. The pair outpaced all to take the win by exactly two sec.
Laura Renwick eased the Heartbreaker nine-year-old Dominant H into second with Louise Saywell right behind her in third aboard the 15-year-old Tin Tin.
Canada’s Kara Chad claimed fourth on Carona just ahead of British-based Irishman Shane Breen on Hallowberry Cruz. Four faults dropped Keith Shore and Hermes down to 20th spot.
Rowan also headed the 1.40m accumulator with joker aboard The Flying Fox, the Ultimo/Lux 10-year-old taking the win by just 0.17 sec. Louise Saywell galloped into second place with the eight-year-old Luidam daughter Pewit Nono. Niel Coupe also scored a maximum on the nine-year-old Dragon for seventh.
David Simpson posted a double clear on Fifa Paola in the six and seven-year-old for seventh, the seven-year-old mare finishing 7.20 sec behind the pace. Clear and four put Rowan and the six-year-old Wellington Grandorie into 11th and Louise returned the same results for 13th on Hashtag.
