Steph Gunn and Southerly Roberts make a return to HOYS
Steph Gunn will return to HOYS to launch another bid for glory after topping the southern silver league semi-final at Keysoe with Quastor Du Buisson Z. The pair finished third last year.
Forty-six initially bid for the seven coveted HOYS finalist places on offer and after two rounds, these were whittled down to 15 for a hot, intense jump-off. But Steph had the win sewn up on the eight-year-old Quartz II Adleheid Z/Kodarco stallion, securing the top spot with 0.78 sec to spare.
Katie Waldock-Smith and brand new ride of two weeks Creevagh Tompico, a seven-year-old mare previously ridden by Tom Whitaker, celebrated with second place. Stephen Worker provided the steadiest of the treble clears for third on Kelsterton Glen, a 13-year-old he has competed for eight years.
Four faulters filled the other qualifying places, Lily Bradstock the fastest of the lot on Benedictus for fourth with Milli Cornock and Bommel in fifth, Jenny Mitchell on Dhuma Varna sixth and taking the final qualifying spot was Emma Smith aboard Appeal.
Southerly Roberts stormed into the top spot of the southern Horseware bronze league semi-final with Tinx. This pair is another to make a return to HOYS, although last year they were contending the working hunter championship.
Forty-nine starters were initially after the seven bronze qualifying places but just 12 made it through to the third and final round against the clock. Southerly confidently upped the pace on the 12-year-old Carnaval Drum daughter to secure the top spot by more than half a sec.
Kerrie Goodwin slotted Roscoes Galani into second with Abbi Jackson on Christopher Robbin IV in third place. Jake Fronda posted the final treble clear on Fergal Fantasia for fourth.
Helen Hughes was the quickest of the four-faulters for fifth on Ruxon Contessa with Georgia Sykes aboard Borienta in sixth and the final qualifying place was awarded to Rachel Chisnell in seventh on HSB Shancourt Diamond.
NB: Qualifications will be updated pending official grading of results.
