Michael Whitaker is a fraction away from victory in the Ascona 5* grand prix

July 23, 2017

Michael Whitaker left the best until last in Ascona, Switzerland, just a fraction of a second denying him victory but good enough for second in the concluding feature 5* 1.60m grand prix on relatively new ride Calisto Blue.

Thirteen of an original 38 starters qualified for the jump-off with Germany’s Hans Deter Dreyer setting an early target on the nine-year-odl Berlinda.  And despite several challenges, no-one could touch the pair.  Michael chased hard on the the Chacco Blue/Con Air 10-year-old Calisto Blue and the pair looked in contention, but they crossed the line just 0.35 sec in arrears for second spot.

Belgium’s Wilm Vermeir took third on Iq Van Het Steentje, again just a fraction behind in this hot jump-off. Laura Renwick also featured in the final barrage, her time beating the winner, but a rail down dropped the Heartbreaker nine-year-old Dominant H down to eighth spot.
