Izzy Armstrong claimed a hat-trick of wins at her first attempt in the Trailblazers second rounds at Richmond Equestrian Centre with two relatively new rides, Salsa and Spike (pictured above).
Salsa, (pictured, left) a 20-year-old 128cm mare bought after watching her jump at a local show at Christmas, headed the under 12 65cm and 75cm classes for Izzy to qualify for the Trailblazers finals.
“We won first time out, I knew she was the pony for me,” said Izzy.
The Dartmoor 138cm Spike was also purchased in January and topped the 85cm after finishing second in the 75cm to qualify for two finals.
“This is the first year I’ve felt confident enough to compete in Trailblazers and larger classes, but both my ponies love jumping just like me,” said Izzy, who has previously competed at Pony Club and unaffiliated level.
Izzy’s confidence has been boosted by attending training clinics with International show jumper Joe Whitaker.
“Joe is so friendly and down-to-earth and he can see straight away what I need to work on,” said Izzy.
William McCarthy was another rider on form, taking second in the 85cm and third in the 75cm aboard Rainbow Valley Pepsi Max to secure their place in the Trailblazers Championships at Stoneleigh on 2 – 5 August.
