Guy Williams takes the grand prix in Reims
Guy Williams jumped to the top in the feature 1.50m 3* grand prix in Reims, France, with Rouge De Ravel.
Nine of the 46 starters posted initial clears and they were joined by one on one time fault and the two fastest four-faulters to make a jump-off of 12. Four returned double clears, Guy ensuring victory was sewn up by 0.33 sec on new ride Rouge De Ravel, an Ultimo Van Ter Moude 12-year-old.
Yazmin Pinchen improved on her first round four faults with a clear in the jump-off on the 13-year-old stallion Van De Vivaldi for sixth. Robert Smith jumped for clear and four and seventh on Bavi with James Smith also clear and four on Balibu for ninth.
James topped the 3* 1.35m on the Kannan/Cumano 10-year-old Twix De La Roque, winning with 2.30 sec in hand. Laura Renwick filled fifth on the eight-year-old Shiraz II (Vagabond De La Pomme/Darco) and Dan Neilson claimed sixth with the Billy Mexico eight-year-old Strides Hattons Treasure – four faults dropping them both from a possible first and second. Yazmin took eighth on Con Chilli.
Brits were in the mix in the 3* 1.45m, Steven Franks filling fourth spot on Brutus III. Seven of the 47 starters posted initial clears to access the jump-off and six provided double clears – it was all about the clock.
Steven guided the Billy Congo 11-year-old Brutus into fourth, five and a half sec behind the winner. Jay Buxton was right behind for fifth with High Offley Arturos Catch. France’s Alexis Borrin took the win on Ruby De La Fosse with more than a sec to spare. James Smith was the quickest of the round-one four-faulters on Bolton Gate Ben for ninth and Kirstie Leightley alo made one mistake for 13th on Thais d’La Verrerie.
Stacey Willsone eased the Wolfgang/Indoctro 13-year-old Newton Nickel into third in the 1* 1.35m grand prix in a five-horse jump-off. The pair jumped double clear to finish three and half sec behind the pace. Jessica Graham and HHS Faldo took 12th on seven faults in round one.
Nancy Pinchen claimed fifth in the 1* 1.25m accumulator, returning a maximum score but finishing nine sec behind the pace. Hitting the first fence dropped Theo Simpson and Flinstering down to 10th with Jessica Graham in 11th on Chicas Flight and Olivia Howe took 12th aboard Corsiro Z. Victoria Hewson slotted into 15th after lowering the pole at fence four with Portphilip Queen.
