Nick Skelton and Big Star to retire at Royal Windsor
Rio 2016 Olympic individual gold medallist Nick Skelton has chosen to officially retire alongside his Olympic partner Big Star.
The legendary pair – who will parade at Aintree this week – will retire at Royal Windsor Horse Show on Sunday, 14 May.
Nick, awarded the CBE after his amazing comeback from breaking his neck in a fall in 2000 to winning gold, talent-spotted the scopey Big Star as a five-year-old. He was bought for owners Beverley and Gary Widdowson and the now 14-year-old helped Nick to earn two gold medals – team gold in London 2012 and their amazing performance in Rio which led to individual gold.
The pair stole hearts in Rio and no-one can forget that tear-jerking gold medal podium moment voted one of the highlights of the Games.
Royal Windsor Horse Show, Show Director, Simon Brooks-Ward spoke of the decision; “Nick Skelton is not only a legend of equestrian sport but of the whole sporting world. What he has achieved in his career is remarkable and we are honoured he has chosen Royal Windsor Horse Show as the place to officially retire along with Big Star.”
