There is just no stopping Joe Whitaker in the age class finals on the Vilamoura Atlantic tour and he posted a glorious victory double on home-bred mares.
"What a day!" he commented on his extraordinary run.
On-form Joe landed the seven-year-old final top spot in the seven-horse decider with Billyjean, a mare by Camilio and out of the Locarno daughter Lovarno – also a successful mare at 3* level with Joe. They claimed the win by the slender margin of 0.06 sec.
Stuart Neads slotted Freya (Baltic VDL/Numero Uno) into fourth with Emma Stoker in fifth and seventh on Pembroke 3 (Perigueux/Quick Star) and Everton de Villee (Arko III/Darco).
A winner 24 hours earlier with Black Pearl Leone, Joe again topped the six-year-old, on this occasion taking the final riding the Checkpoint de Lison daughter Fairy Tale. The pair earned a 1.53 sec advantage to win from Spain’s Pascal Levy on Caro. Chloe Aston claimed 10th on Flavie van de Helle with clear and eight. On unlucky fours in the first round was Tim Page in 14th (Wild Balou Bill), Joe 15th and 17th on Black Pearl Leone and Gallica), Emma Stoker 16th (Cool Cash), Laura Johnson’s Off the Record in 18th and Leo Lorimer in 21st on Lui-Jo Vls.
Vanessa Jobson-Scott stormed ahead in the five-year-old speed with Muna VD Bisschop, steering the Windows VH Costers/Nabab de Reve mare into a 2.66 sec victory. Chloe Aston guided Merci de Geliveaux into third and also picked up 10th on Magic Chanti with a quick four faults. Emma Stoker (Grand Stakkato) and Leo Lorimer (Prince van de Waterhoeve) finished 14th and 15th, also on four faults.
