Julie Andrews is on song in Italy
Julie Andrews saved the best until last at Gorla Minore 3*, Italy, taking a fine victory on Ayrton IV in the top-billed 1.50m grand prix to conclude week two on a high.
Fifty-eight contended but a tough course saw many fade away, and only five first-round clears were produced.
Already a multi-winner over the two weeks at this show, the ultra-consistent Ayrton, a Cantos/Burggraaf 12-year-old, responded with relish to Julie in the jump-off to take the win by an impressive 3.31 sec. Italy’s Clementina Grossi was the nearest rival for second on Zquasimodo R.
It was double celebrations for the Andrews family – Julie’s husband David was also toasting his birthday.
Katie Gygax claimed ninth in the 1.35m with the Diamant de Semilly 10-year-old Halloween Sitte, finishing almost six sec behind the winner, Switzerland’s Martin Fuchs on Cristo.
In Saturday’s 1.25m, Katie guided the Quality Touch/Fergar Mail mare Vigo Mail into seventh with a double clear four sec behind the winner. Julie Andrews picked up 12th on Senator C C Catch II with clear and four.
Katie and Vigo Mail moved up the order in Sunday’s 1.25m, jumping double clear for sixth spot, 1.71 sec in arrears of the winning time. And an easy clear in Sunday’s 1.40m on Ubie de Givre put Katie into 19th.
