Steven Franks is best Brit in the big class at Mijas


Steven Franks guided Brutus III into third in the Costa del Sol tour's Master 1.45m in Mijas, Spain. Thirty-one tackled this top-billed two-phase with 13 jumping clear rounds in the first half. Steven and the Billy Congo/Galvano 11-year-old Brutus slotted into third 2.05 sec behind the winner, the Netherlands’ Leon Thijssen on Bulavsco. Louise Whitaker took sixth on Udget du Rozel with Max Routledge eighth on Sieco and John Whitaker was also double clear on Talisman de Mazure for 10th. Max Routledge jumped for clear and four on Stapleton Mist to take 11th and William Funnell on Billy Congo – Brutus’ sire – finished 13th.

John was best Brit in the Master 1.40m, taking fifth on the German-bred, Cassus-sired nine-year-old Crumley, 1.81 sec behind the pace. Peter Charles jumped for clear and four on Sacree du Rouet to take ninth and Chloe Smith was unlucky to finish 0.09 sec over the time in round one to pick up one time fault and 10th on Candy Boy. Stacey Babes incurred two time faults for 15th on Very Chic du Tillard.

Louise jumped into second in the Master 1.35m on yesterday’s winner Cuata (Tsungske/Iroko), 0.95 sec behind the winner, Greece’s Angelos Touloupis on Coco Chanell 15. Alex Gill eased West Falica into fourth with John in fifth on Chino D’Enfer. Anna Power was seventh on Edison V and Peter Charles posted the steadiest double clear for 11th on ABC Quantum Cruise.

Helena Cassir and Cellestial 11-year-old Curley Sue popped into fourth in the Premium Gold 1.40m with four faults over the two rounds of the two-phase class. And John Whitaker guided the seven-year-old Areba II (Argento/Indorado) into a steady clear in the Premium 1.30m speed for seventh.

Lauren Edwards claimed third in the Premium 1.40m on the Kannan/Carnaval drum 10-year-old Carnaval Cocktail, 0.77 sec behind the winner, New Zealand’s Bruce Goodin on Caltona. Alex Gill picked up sixth on The Drawness, a former ride of Julie Andrews and Jamie Wingrove, and Harry Charles posted the steadiest of the double clears for eighth on Ernestine F. Max picked up one time fault in the second phase on Centos Girl for ninth.

Lara Whiteway claimed victory in the Premium 1.20mm on the Indoctro/Corland 10-year-old Cavalia WH to win by 0.35 sec. Robert Smith took fourth on Times Up, a seven-year-old by his former top ride Big Time and out of an Andiamo mare. Olivia Howe claimed eighth on Wantos with Henry Truelove in 13th aboard Evaterma and Max Routledge also double clear for 17th on Fifa Paola.

Rachel Williams also posted victory in the 1.10m, guiding Figaro (Azteca VDL/Sir Corland) into a 0.17 sec win. Rachel also picked up seventh on Love Me Tender. Rebecca Ellis finished 10th on Billy Armstrong and Olivia Howell was also clear for 12th on Black Label.
