Jessica Mendoza is in the mix in Wellington's grand prix
Jessica Mendoza featured in the Winter Equestrian Festival’s top-billed $216,000 4* grand prix at the conclusion of week eight in Wellington with Toy Boy.
Forty-three initially contended with 17 of these posting first round clears for a high octane jump-off. But only seven could repeat the feat as they raced against the clock, with Jess and Toy Boy filling the fifth spot, 1.44 sec behind the winner.
Already a winner earlier in the week and a member of Ireland’s victorious Nations Cup team, Shane Sweetnam swept into an unbeatable lead on the Chacco-Blue 11-year-old Chaqui Z to win by two hundredths of a sec from fellow Irishman Conor Swail on Rubens LS la Silla.
Ben Maher and Its Real Love VD Smis Z returned four faults in round one to drop out of contention and Amanda Derbyshire’s Sibell BH had eight.
Amanda jumped a double clear to take seventh in Saturday’s WEF Suncast classic 1.50m with the German-bred, Con Air nine-year-old Cornwall BH.
Nine of 49 reached the jump-off, with Amanda posting the steadiest of the penalty-free rounds, more than three sec behind the winner, the USA’s Lucy Deslauriers on Hester.
Jessica and Horst van de Mispelaere returned on four faults in round one of the under 25 grand prix to drop out of contention and into 17th.
