Richard Howley speeds to a win on the Costa del Sol tour
Ireland’s Richard Howley landed the Master 1.40m speed on Calmond in fine style on the Costa del Sol tour, Mijas. He guided the Clarimo 10-year-old into an unbeatable lead to win by 0.68 sec. Anna Power and Chesterfield Z claimed fourth, behind the pace by 1.33 sec. Scarlett Charles was also double clear for ninth on Sacree du Rouet with John Whitaker dropping out of contention with four in the second phase on Crumley.
Daisy Davis jumped into fifth in the Master 1.30m, the Cheers Cassini 12-year-old Anatar II almost six sec in arrears. Ben Raistrick took eighth on Benevita with Lara Whiteway in 11th spot on Bellagio II and Adrian Whiteway eased Sharon Baldwin’s Cash Point into 15th.
Brits were out of luck in the world ranking 1.50m grand prix, Anna Power and the promising the Couleur Rubin 11-year-old Crack van Overis Z posting the best result with four faults in round one for 13th.
Nineteen of the 44 went forward to the jump-off, the four-faulters joining the 12 initial clears. Six provided double clears with the Netherlands’ Doron Kuipers on the Quasimodo Z nine-year-old Dickyville taking the win. Richard Howley took 15th on Chinook and Harry Charles, posting a steadier four faults in round one, claimed 19th on Vivaldi du Dom with Louise Whitaker immediately behind on Ruby VIII.
John Whitaker eased Chino D’Enfer into fourth in the Premium 1.40m, the Conterno Grande 10-year-old finishing 3.58 sec in behind the pace. His daughter Louise claimed sixth on Abeer II OL with a double clear and Sienna Charles took 11th on Chaitanya 2 on clear and four.
Brits filled the top three of the Premium 1.30m, Lauren Edwards proving the fastest of the lot on the Kannan/Carnaval Drum 10-year-old Carnaval Cocktail to win by 0.24 sec. Lara Whiteway slotted into second on the 10-year-old Cavalia WH (Indoctro/Corland) and Carron Nicol took third with Jaguar VD Berghoeve, now recovered from a nasty sand rash infection.
Anna Power took seventh on Fix Date with John Whitaker on Diddo va Sint Maarten in eighth and Ben Clark’s Lanverdel in ninth. Max Routledge was also clear on Centos Girl for 19th.
Lauren also posted a second place in the 1.20m, 0.72 sec behind the winner on the Pall Mall H/Kannan six-year-old Expresso. Leonne George took fifth on I Candy II with Skye Klein and Heavy C in 11th and Megan Broadway 12th aboard Danturano. Four faults dropped Sanda Nicol (Fashion for Pleasure) to 15th, Gemma Wright (On Board Candy) to 16th and Lara Whiteway to 18th on Rodeo D’Avril.
Ben Clark took fourth with Clarence II in the Premium 1.10m and Jessica Blatchford claimed ninth on Clementienne.
