Peter Charles steps up with ABC Quantum Cruise


Peter Charles has patiently jumped clear rounds with the Obos Quality eight-year-old ABC Quantum Cruise, but he was in the mix in the Costa del Sol tour’s world ranking Master 1.45m in Mijas. The pair posted a good double clear to take second, finishing 3.37 sec behind the winner, Switzerland’s Alain Jufer aboard Casall, a 13-year-old by Casall ASK out of a Cantus mare.

Pippa Funnell jumped into fourth with her husband William’s top stallion Billy Congo. Only five double clears in the 13-strong jump-off were produced, with Harry Charles and Vivaldi du Dom taking seventh on clear and four. John Whitaker was right behind them on Echo of Light for eighth place. Anna Power cleared all the fences but picked up a time fault on Crack van Overis Z for 14th. On four faults in round one was Louise Whitaker (Ruby VIII), Bethanie Knight (Quenotte) and Stacey Babes (Camillo VDL).

Pippa also featured in the Master 1.35m, taking sixth on the Perion/Heartbreaker nine-year-old West Falica, more than five sec behind the winner, Spain’s Diego Perez Bilbao on Ti Pol D’Orchis. Max Routledge was ninth on Firkov du Rouet with Richard Howley in 14th on Silent Jotter on clear and four and John Whitaker 15th aboard Talisman de Mazure.

Ben Raistrick galloped into second in the Master 1.30m on Benevita, guiding the 11-year-old to finish 0.61 sec behind the pace. Lara Whiteway took fourth on Bellagio II with Louise Whitaker in fifth on Cleopatra. Pippa finished 12th on Billy Starlet and her husband William also jumped clear for 17th on Billy Manjaro. Richard Howley had to settle for 18th after incurring a time fault with Houpette.

Super-speedy Lauren Edwards claimed a victory double in the 1.20m and 1.10m classes. She topped the 1.10m with Expresso with a second in front on Andy Doswell’s Pall Mall H/Kannan six-year-old. Francesca Draycott took fifth on Fernhill Fair Cruise with Ben Clark in seventh on Clarence II.

And the 1.20m also fell to Lauren on the Kannan/Carnaval Drum 10-year-old Carnaval Cocktail with almost a second in hand. Sophie Garfield-Bennet took fifth on Cirmosa and Julie Slade was 10th on Billy Angelo.

In the Premium 1.40m, Ben Clark jumped into sixth on Valentino, just over three sec behind the winning time. John Whitaker and Chino D’Enfer finished in 10th place with Louise taking 15th on Abeer II OL. Also jumping double clears was Gemma Wright in 18th on Ulrike van Overis Z, Scarlett Charles and Sacree du Rouet in 19th, Sienna Charles, 20th on Chaitanya 2 followed by Stacey Babes (Cazador LS) and William Funnell (Billy Dorito).

Anna Power was almost nine sec behind the pace for ninth in the Premium 1.30m on Fix Date. Leo Lamb was also clear for 12th on Trevor Breen’s former ride Oldtown KC and John Whitaker picked up a time fault and 14th place on Diddo van Sint Maarten.
