Louise Whitaker is in the frame with Cleopatra in Mijas

Louise Whitaker and Special Warrior jumped into second in the Costa del Sol’s seven-year-old final in Mijas.

A total of 39 initially contended with 15 producing round one clears, Louise posting another good clear on Brendon Stud’s home-bred mare with Warrior/Caretino Glory bloodlines. However, she couldn’t catch Belgium’s Karel Cox, who swept into an unbeatable lead on Fortuna to take victory by three sec.

Stacey Babes on Flairvona (Air Jordan/Numero Uno) and Ben Clark aboard Falanta (Classic DL/Conello) also gained jump-off access, but four faults in round two dropped them to 11th and 13th. Bethanie Knight scored four faults with both Foss and Cassalfino, John Whitaker returned on five faults with Areba II and Leonne George finished on six faults with Katinka.

Carron Nicol was best Brit in the six-year-old final on the talented Galerius. She guided the Diamant de Semilly/Sandro Boy stallion into fourth to finish 1.11 sec behind the winner, the Netherlands’ Yves Houtackers on Gracieuza H. Ben Raistrick was also double clear on Cool Boy (Coco Jambo/Justinian) for sixth.

Four faults in the jump-off dropped Carron on second ride Moonraker, Adrian Whiteway aboard Kimba and Lauren Edwards’ Kesara dropped them to 10th, 11th and 13th respectively. Scarlett Charles picked up two time faults but was otherwise clear on Glitter for 19th and Richard Howley returned on four with LSS Barbados and Heather M.

Only six reached the jump-off of the five-year-old final, including two Brits. But a victory was not to be as the speedy Doron Kuipers riding for the Netherlands took the top spot on Helvetia Moeders W. Ben Raistrick eased Heaven Can Wait E (Up to Date/Cavalier) into third 2.46 sec behind the winning time and Lauren Edwards claimed fourth on Andy Doswell’s Carumba (Cardento/Grandilot). Both Carron Nicol with Goldeneye and Ben on second ride Hessel posted jumping clears in round one but picked up a frustrating time fault for seventh and ninth places.
