Derek McCoppin takes victory on day one on the Spanish Sunshine tour

British-based Irishman Derek McCoppin commandingly claimed victory in the small tour 1.30m on day one of the Spanish sunshine tour in Vejer de la Frontera. He was more than six sec in front on The Ard VDL Douglas/Touchdown 12-year-old Whiterock Lucky Lady to take the win, pushing Kayleigh Watts into second on the eight-year-old mare Fashion V. Kayleigh also netted fourth with Kondy. Matt Sampson clocked one time fault with Ebolensky for ninth and Chloe Winchester (Hasj VH Vliegenhof Z) and Leonie Aitkenhead (Jimmy Mack V Berkenbroeck returned on two time faults. Chloe with second ride Contiki and Aimee Jones’ Ultravox II finished on three.

In the medium tour 1.35m, Matt Sampson jumped into third with new ride Sheyenne 27, a 10-year-old Sandro Boy daughter. They finished 0.88 sec behind the winner, Ireland’s Alex Duffy on Barnike. Derek McCoppin claimed fifth with the Indoctro 13-year-old Zaire and fellow Irishman Chris Megahey took 10th aboard Curprice. Aimee Jones (Lilly 483), Ellen Whitaker (Arena UK Winston) and Christie Tamarin (Grupo Prom Jivaro) also jumped double clear in the 63-strong class.

Aimee Jones jumped round for one time fault in the big class of the day, the 1.40m, with Never Last for 17th. British-based Irishman Chris Megahey and his Puissance specialist Seapatrick Cruise Cavalier finished on three faults and Kayliegh Watts jumped for four faults with Winde. Germany’s Katharina Offel took victory on Thelma la Tour Vidal.

Jake Ward filled the top two places in the 1.10m, winning on Falbella de Messitert and taking second with Frederick VII, 0.74 sec separating the two.
