John Whitaker is oh so close in Basel

So near, yet so far. Less than a second prevented John Whitaker from taking victory in Basel’s 5* 1.60m grand prix. John was on top form as he eased Team Harmony’s 12-year-old For Pleasure daughter Ornellaia into a first round clear to join the 15-strong jump-off, comprising of 10 clears, one on one time fault and four fast four-faulters.

Despite his late challenge, John couldn’t catch Belgium’s Niels Bruynseels on Gancia De Muze, finishing just 0.97 sec in arrears.

But it was a thumbs up from John as he did pick up a brand new car as leading rider of the show, finishing eight points ahead of Switzerland's Pius Schwizer.

Australia’s Edwina Tops-Alexander took third on Lintea Tequila. Laura Renwick carried four faults from round one and proved penalty-free in round two on Van de Vivaldi to take 13th spot. Michael Whitaker and Cassionato returned on five faults in round one.

Italy’s Emanuele Gaudiano topped the 1.45m speed on Carlotta with 0.74 sec to hand over France’s Patrice Delaveau and Carinjo HDC. Laura Renwick and Con Chilli came home on four to drop to 19th spot and John Whitaker with Crumley returned five faults.
