John Whitaker is in the money in Basel
Only five clears from 56 starters over a tough track were in evidence in the major class of the day, the 1.55m, at Basel 5*, Switzerland, and John Whitaker was most unlucky not to join them.
Time caught out three riders to come home on just one time fault, John being the fastest of the three on Team Harmony’s Ornellaia to take sixth.
Sweden’s Rolf-Goran Bengtsson and the wonderful 18-year-old stallion Casall ASK took victory by just 0.03 sec from Italy’s Lorenzo de Luca with Halifax van het Kluizebos. Laura Renwick with Van de Vivaldi and Scott Brash aboard Ursula XII both incurred four faults.
John with Old Lodge’s Berlin/Kannan nine-year-old Leen OL slotted into sixth spot in the 1.50m accumulator, unusually with two Jokers. Thirty-nine riders tackled the track, with Switzerland’s Pius Schwizer taking the win for the host country on Leonard de la Ferme CH. John was almost six sec behind the pace. A fence down for Laura Renwick (Dominant H) and Scott Brash (Hello M’Lord) dropped them to 22nd and 23rd respectively.
Michael Whitaker eased Con Man JX – a Conterno Grande 10-year-old – into eighth in the 1.45m speed. It was a steady round, they were almost nine sec behind the winner, Switzerland’s Steve Guerdat on Albfeuhren’s Happiness. Scott Brash on Hello Annie returned four faults to drop to 19th.
A double clear in a hotly contended amateur 1.30m put Katie Gygax and Ubie Du Givre in 16th place. Katie also posted a steadier second clear on Halloween Sitte for 23rd.
