James Billington is victorious in Zuidbroek

James Billington rounded off a good show at Zuidbroek 2*, Holland, with a win in the 1.40m medium tour final. Only seven of 48 starters reached the second round with an initial clear, with James taking victory by a slender 0.05 sec on Celena VDL, a 10-year-old mare with Mr Blue/Chin Chin bloodlines.

Max Routledge was out of luck in the world ranking 1.45m grand prix with four faults on Stapleton Mist, but two British-produced horses formerly ridden by Dan Neilson were in the frame. Germany’s Philip Rupling jumped double clear to finish third two sec behind the pace on the scopey 10-year-old Clinton daughter Clinta, and the Netherlands’ Eric van der Vleuten was fractionally slower for fourth with Zigali PS, a Kigali 13-year-old that Dan originally sold to Canada’s Eric Lamaze.

The Netherlands’ Sanne Thijssen won the 12-strong jump-off on Ulena.
