A winner already on NewYear’s Day in the first amateur class of the day, Jessica Hewitt doubled up in the Irish Horse Gateway amateur 1.30m final riding Rusty.
Jess had already topped the amateur 1.20m on Celtic Cavalier, and she didn’t rest on her laurels in the following 1.30m final, pushing the Kalusha sired 19-year-old Rusty into an unbeatable lead to win by two sec.
“He’s amazing. He can turn, take strides out and is so careful, he can do everything. It was all about going quick, and he is really quick,” said Jess, on Pat Squibb’s consistent Rusty. “He loves it – sometimes a bit too much! – but he’s got everything you would want in a horse, careful, brave, scopey, quick and smooth.”
Ireland’s Aisling Byrne jumped into second with the opening draw on the Chippendale Z nine-year-old Celeste SPB Z with Saturday’s winner Kerstin Deakin in third on Sunsolde.
“Aisling went five strides to the last and I knew I could take one less stride there,” said Jess. “This is a great start to 2017, I hope it carries on.”
Nine posted double clears in this two-phase final, with Olli Fletcher on Temple Rebus in fourth, Aimee Jones took fifth aboard Lilly 483 and Brian Thompson guided Aredis De La Rose into sixth.
