Harrie Smolders jumps clear to win at Olympia
Last to go Harrie Smolders only had to produce a clear to win Sunday night’s H&M Ivy Stakes at Olympia with Corrada. Not as easy as it sounds – top riders, including Brits Michael Whitaker and William Funnell and former world number 1 Kevin Staut had failed to do so in the five-horse decider.
But Harrie pulled it out of the bag on the Oklund daughter Corrada. He was 10 sec slower than Kevin – briefly in the lead on with the fastest four on Unna De Kerglenn – but most importantly, Harrie was clear, although the back rail of the final oxer bounced in the cups, but stayed.
“My horse is not so fast, it was the only way to win!” joked Harrie, who has ridden the nine-year-old for two months. “It’s a nice competition to win with a new horse. She is quite green but a horse can learn a lot here and she is very calm.”
First drawn Michael Whitaker claimed third on Jayne Bean’s 10-year-old Locarno daughter JB’s Hot Stuff with William Funnell in fourth on the eight-year-old Billy McCain. Both tipped the front rail off an oxer to finish on four faults each. Laura Renwick returned four in round one to take ninth on Dominant H and Robert bevis jumped for five faults on KBIS Caicos.
Anna Power aboard Chesterfield Z partnered Northern Ireland’s Iveagh pony club member Annie Gibson, 11, on Lisbox Black Magic to win the H&M Pony Club Mini-Major by the narrowest of margins.

“It’s the first time I have been to Olympia and it’s absolutely amazing,” said Annie, who lives near Belfast. “Anna told me to go in and have fun, which is what I wanted to do, and, once I was in there, I just went for it.”
Just 0.01 sec separated them from second-placed Lorenzo de Luca with Balou Du Coeur Joye and Harriet Birkby on Tisrara Snowy (pictured).
Laura Renwick and Amy Morris on Madonna (pictured) took third with Jos Verlooy and Tatiane Mauree fourth. Bertram Allen partnered Arthur Conlon to fifth with Rebekka Lie Anderson and Atiya Bussey sixth and Johan-Sebastian Gulliksen with Charlotte Page in sixth. Nicola Philippaerts and Zoe Webber took seventh.
