Holly Smith and the big-jumping, rangy Irish-bred eight-year-old Quality Old Joker maintained their 100% Puissance record with another win – this time at the prestigious Olympia.
They had to share the top spot with British-based Irishman Chris Megahey with the Cruise On 14-year-old Seapatrick Cruise Cavalier. The competition went the full five rounds, with Holly and Chris the only riders to jump clear over a massive 2.15m in the final round.
Laura Renwick cleared the wall three times to take fourth on the seven-year-old Top Dollar, and Robert Bevis finished sixth on Pebbles with a double clear. David Murdoch and Senor D jumped for clear and four to take seventh and Bolesworth winner Chloe Winchester unfortunately had four faults in round on on Shannondale Linnet for eighth.
Ben Maher jumped into second with Don Vito, a Quaprice/Jus De Pomme eight-year-old, in the Santa Stakes 1.55m, finishing just 0.22 sec behind Germany’s Daniel Deusser with Hidalgo VG. Michael Whitaker slotted the Locarno sired 10-year-old JB’s Hot Stuff into eighth with Scott Brash and Hello Guv’Nor just behind in ninth.
Ireland’s Anthony Condon borrowed Louise Pavitt’s consistent winner Fiona Van Het Lemmenshof, and immediately claimed victory in the opening warm-up 1.40m, the Nonstop 11-year-old firing into the top spot by more than two sec. Laura Renwick rode into second on Yazmin Pinchen’s Heartbreaker eight-year-old Dominant H, beating Germany’s Marcus Ehning and Comme Il Faut into third. William Funnell brought Billy McCain into sixth with Scott Brash eighth on Hello M’Lady.
And Anthony took fifth in the Christmas Pudding Stakes 1.50m speed with Balzac, Kat Taylor’s Oklund 10-year-old. They finished three and a half sec behind the winner, Italy’s Lorenzo de Luca on Halifax Van Het Kluizebos. Laura Renwick was best Brit in 14th with four faults on Con Chilli and Ben Maher’s Cassius Clay took 15th. Michael Whitaker also returned four with Elie Van De Kolmen for 19th.
