So near, yet so far. Just half a sec prevented Ireland’s David Simpson from claiming victory in the MET Autumn tour's Gold 1.45m grand prix in Oliva Nova on Chessy 17. The pair put in a sterling performance in the 18-strong jump-off – yielded from 76 starters – but David and the Cellestial/Kolibri 12-year-old slotted into second behind fellow Irishman Niall Talbot on Caracter.
Jess Dimmock jumped another good clear on the consistent Varo/Lancer eight-year-old Cybel II for sixth. Ireland’s Anthony Condon was just one hundredth of a second behind the winner on the Oklund 10-year-old Balzac, but a lowered rail dropped them to eighth and Spencer Roe claimed ninth with clear and four on Wonder Why. Alison Barton jumped for clear and eight for 15th on Roma IV.
Brits filled the top three places in the Gold 1.40m, Chad Fellows and Beat Me, a Tangelo Van De Zuuthoeve/Nabab De Reve 10-year-old, winning by 0.24 sec. Matt Sampson claimed second on the Billy Mexico/Vechta eight-year-old Billy Tortilla with Graham Gillespie in third on the home-bred Celine, a Calvaro Z/Heartbreaker nine-year-old. Ellen Whitaker eased Arena UK Winston into seventh, just ahead of David Simpson and Grafit in eighth. Also jumping double clear was Louise Simpson (Double Deuce Retto) and Ben Raistrick (Rumers Cascari) for 13th and 16th respectively.
Will Edwards topped the Bronze 1.30m speed on SHW Candies B, taking victory with the Chacco Blue/Heartbreaker six-year-old by 1.32 sec. He beat Ireland’s Kirsten Farr into second on R Candy – a former ride of his and brother Will. Charlotte Alpin took fourth with Delanini. Sophie Bennett eased Kanga Rouge into 11th with Victoria Bennett 12th on Brandon and Lily Beveridge taking 13th on Taima.
Abbe Elliott claimed second on the Lupicor nine-year-old Casti Aneira in the Gold 1.30m speed, but no-one could catch Egypt’s Sameh El Dahan, who galloped away with the class by more than three sec on Joanne Sloan Allen’s Chiquito Z. Carmen Edwards took fourth on Jasper Bogibo Z with Alison Barton in fifth aboard Billy Anna. Ireland’s Michael Duffy took sixth on Rumbolds Warriors Echo, Roger McCrea was just behind in seventh on Witro and David Simpson claimed 11th with Starfighter.
Madeleine Kellett took second in the Bronze 1.15m on the Irish 13-year-old Smokey Malone, 1.74 sec behind the winner. Ashley Ray and Fort Blue claimed ninth with Joe Veitch 14th on Art Candy and Ethan Bracken 16th aboard Kraque Boom HR.
Joanne Whitaker rode into fifth on Andorra in the Bronze 1.25m with Nissi Sabina Ladell sixth on Exclusive Vant Schaaphof. Daniella Mattock took 12th on Moneymoon and Theo Simpson finished in 15th spot on Flinstering. And Richard Jenkinson took eighth in the Bronze 1.40m with Adorette W.
