Billy Twomey maxed on his final draw with Ardcolum Duke to take a hotly contended Accumulator, beating long-time leader Julien Epaillard riding Quatrin De La Roque for France.
An imposing set of huge planks as the Joker caught out more than half of the 30 starters and only riders on the most careful horses risked galloping down to them, eight providing maximum scores.
Julien had taken an early lead with a quick, economic round and despite a spirited challenge, John Whitaker and Echo of Light finished just outside the time, 0.18 sec in arrears. But Billy used smooth, seemingly unhurried lines to snatch victory by 0.83 sec on the 12-year-old Gypsy Duke/Clover Hill stallion.
John on the Come On/Contender 11-year-old Echo of Light, who showed scope and ability and a clean pair of heels over the big Joker, took third.
Ireland’s Anthony Condon slotted Kat Taylor’s Balzac into fourth, just ahead of fellow Irishman Cian O’Connor and Aramis 573 in fifth. Anna Power claimed sixth on the big-jumping Chesterfield Z.
