Britain are in the mix in round one of the FEI National Cup final in Barcelona

It’s still all to play for in the Furussiya FEI Nations Cup final with just one fence separating the top six.

After round one and 18 teams contending, three teams returned a zero score, with Germany, the USA and last year's winner's Belgium holding the top spot at the halfway stage. Britain is in fourth on four faults with Switzerland and Italy.

British pathfinders Nick Skelton and Big Star produced the goods with a clear, and Michael Whitaker followed suit with Viking to put Team GBR in a strong position. Scott Brash and Ursula came home on just one mistake for four faults, but it didn’t go according to plan for John Whitaker and Ornellaia, who returned on eight as the drop score.

But the result was sufficient to survive the cut, and the team will contend round two.

Both carrying eight faults, The Netherlands and Ireland join them and will jump in round two’s eight-team final on Saturday.

Jessica Mendoza jumped a steady clear on Spirit T in the Coca Cola speed to finish down the line. John Whitaker (Echo of Light) and his brother Michael (JB’s Hot Stuff) returned on four faults and Scott Hello Guv’Nor had eight.
