Robert Smith is second at Spruce Meadows
Robert Smith and the eight-year-old Calvaro/Heartbreaker stallion Ilton claimed second in the six-bar. Only two reached the round four, with Ilton coming home on eight to leave Canada’s Chris Surbey in the winner’s spot with another clear on Arezzo.
One time fault prevented Robert and Bavi from contending the Friends of the Meadow 1.60m jump-off. Only five provided clears with Robert settling for sixth spot. Scott Brash and Ursula XII posted four faults to take ninth.
Britain only fielded a team of three in the Nations Cup, putting them at a distinct disadvantage, and they finished ninth of ten teams. Robert and Bavi returned on 22 faults, Nigel Coupe with Golvers Hill scored 17 and Scott Brash on Hello Gov’Nor finished on four faults.
The top six teams made the cut to go forward to round two, won by Switzerland.
Nigel and Jubilee III finished 12th in the 1.50m winning round on one time fault. Ireland’s Cian O’Connor took the win on Callisto.
