Billy Twomey takes two seconds in Gijon

Ireland’s Billy Twomey claimed second in 5* 1.50m at Gijon, Spain, on Michael Bates’ home-bred Quidam De Revel nine-year-old Thomas. They were beaten by just a quarter of a sec by Abdullah Al Sharbatly on Talan, the 16-year-old Concorde/Burggraaf stallion formerly by Robert Smith at top level for Pennie and Di Cornish.

Tim Stockdale finished fifth with Erasmus Van De Heffinck.

Billy also eased the 12-year-old stallion Ardcolum Duke into second in the Coca-Cola 1.40m speed, finishing 2.18 sec behind winner, Mexico’s Antonio Chedraui E on Corcega La Silla. Fellow Irishman Dermott Lennon took third on Fleur.

Joe Whitaker finished third in the young horse 1.30/1.35m speed on the seven-year-old Locarno daughter Diola, 2.55 sec behind the pace. Tim Wilks and Jezebel jumped a steadier round for 15th.
