Rachel Walker and Bo Gi take the HOYS Silver League qualifier at Bishop Burton
Rachel Walker is off to HOYS after topping the Northern Silver League semi final at Bishop Burton on Bo Gi.
Both qualifiers were held indoors as the rules stipulate despite the blazing sunshine at the beginning of August, and from a 42-strong startlist, 20 partnerships produced first round clears. These were further whittled down to just eight chasing seven HOYS qualification places. One rider was going to be disappointed.
Rachel had all the answers on the Numero Uno/Sandro mare Bo Gi, a 10-year-old she has ridden for six years, flying round in a lightning-quick effort to secure victory by 3.61 sec.
Gilian Anderson claimed second on Congeniality B, a Quinar/Carthago Z nine-year-old mare. This partnership is hoping to go one better in the final – they took second at HOYS last year.
Paul Bevan, third last year with the impressive Deangelo, has another chance for glory this year on the Tangelo Van De Zuuthoeve/Kashmir Van Schuttershof eight-year-old after taking third here. The pair will also contend the talentseekers final after qualifying at Addington.
Kate Lewis and the nine-year-old Vileva took fourth with fifth-placed Laura Frisby making dreams come true with her HOYS debut on the Odermus R 12-year-old Zula Maeva.
Sally Swiers, who has just been selected for the Veteran Riders European Championships in Arezzo, Italy, in September on Millfield Long Socks, guided the nine-year-old into sixth.
HOYS 2015 Silver League champion Katie Shaw claimed the seventh and final HOYS qualifying spot on the home-bred Fools Business, an Its The Business 14-year-old, and is out to regain her title.
And Katie also landed a finalist place in the Horseware Bronze League final, taking second on Jan Davidson’s Cyloma Z.
The Cicero Z Van Paemel/Landor S seven-year-old mare relished the quicker pace in the jump-off, but Katie couldn’t quite catch the winner and had to settle for second.
A total of 51 competitors bid for the seven Bronze League HOYS places with 28 providing initial clears over Neil Foster’s course, and these being further reduced for a hotly contended 22-strong jump-off.
A late round from 2014 HOYS champions Julia Helm on her Fritz Luke sired 17-year-old mare Helms Tolu claimed the top spot with half a sec to spare. They are out this year to improve on their 2015 fourth place and regain their 2014 title.
It was all about the clock as eight combinations produced treble clears. Angela Mills was a fraction behind for third on Quids In II, a Quite Capitol/Carthago Z 12-year-old, with Emily Morris – winner of the earlier 1m warm-up – aboard the Ultmo 11-year-old Ultimatum II in fourth.
Samantha McNicholas jumped into fifth on the Lux 12-year-old Starlux with Martha Newall aboard her British Masters amateur winner Ashton Landorina, a Landor S 11-year-old, in sixth and Nigel Thorpe on Harmonie D in seventh.
Jessica Hewitt headed the 1.30m on Zaronda II with a 0.60 sec advantage over Charlie Dawson on MB Landini, winner of the earlier Foxhunter, with Scarlett Ward on Calista H third.
Rachael Connor was second in the Foxhunter on Fantastic and also headed the 1.05m on B Valeree with Emerson Sender in second on Frangelina.
Rebecca Seidl topped another Foxhunter on Doberlina G with Kate Lewis on Vileva II second and Rachael Connor third aboard Lottie III.
Aileen Craig claimed victory in the 1.15m riding Gunar S from Sophie Edenborough with Quick Liberty and Rebecca Seidl in third on Quality Star.
