James Hughes takes the area trial at Bakewell

James Hughes is on a roll. Just four days after winning the area trial at Heckington on Peiter, his second ride Cordalis 7 stepped up to the place and headed Bakewell’s area trial.

Course-designer David Cole set a long 12-fence track in the main arena, and the final double of verticals proved the bogey, but 11 from 26 accessed the jump-off. However, only three double clears were achieved, James taking the win with an early round on Cordalis.

The Casado/Landlord 10-year-old was acquired 18 months ago from previous rider Nigel Coupe, and the new partnership enjoyed success on the Magna Racina tour last year.

James, however, has work commitments in the family metal exporters firm, and showjumping has to take a back seat. Dan Moseley achieved results in Vilamoura earlier in the year, and Cordalis returned to James in April to contend the county circuit.

“I can’t get away from work to jump abroad, but Cordalis found form recently, jumping at Great Yorkshire and Hickstead has brought him on,” said James.

Holly Smith took second on the eight-year-old Lammy Beach with Alison Barton in third on Roma IV. Kerry Brennan – who lives just three miles from the showground – posed a late challenge on Wellngton M and was some four sec up, but the final vertical fell to drop them to fourth.

Geoff Goodwin topped the accumulator with Joker on Cruising Light, a 14-year-old Irish-bred son of Cruisings Micky Finn. The pair have been together for a year, with Geoff’s daughter Abbie occasionally taking the ride.

Corinne Collins took second and third on Bugatti B and Dolores P. Corinne had claimed victory in the first class of the day, the 1.30m, on Dolores, an eight-year-old mare bought three months earlier.

“She was sharp at first, I’m just getting to grips with her,” said Corinne, who go the mare three months ago after her partner Richard Beech bought her for Corinne.

Robert Maguire netted second on Britney with Jess Hewitt on Zaronda in third and Corinne on Bugatti fourth.
