Britain bags Bronze in the junior European championships at Millstreet

In a tense, thrilling, three-way decider, Britain’s junior squad bagged a bronze medal at the children, junior and young rider European championships in Millstreet, Ireland.

Strong, solid performances saw several nations huddled in the top places at the midway stage. Denmark, Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands and Sweden were tied at the top on a zero score. Britain was just one fence behind on four faults with Belgium and France. It was all to play for.

Pathfinder Leonie Aitkenhead, 18, posted a great double clear on the nine-year-old Clane K.

Scarlett Charles and the 10-year-old Sacree Du Rouet improved on their round one eight with four faults in round two and Emily Ward reversed the scores, with four and eight on Anne Bedford’s 10-year-old Remi Cavalleri.

Anchorman Harry Charles knew only a double clear would do, and he duly delivered on the nine-year-old Controe and it putr Britain in a jump-off situation.

Scarlett shone in the jump-off, producing a great clear on Sacree du Rouet, but Leonie, Emily and Harry all returned on eight to total 16 and take Bronze. Belgium took Gold on eight faults,proving 4.14 sec faster than Italy, also on eight faults for Silver.

Britain’s young rider squad didn’t fare so well. Tim Wilks and Quelbora Merze, Millie Allen with Balou Star and Jake Saywell on Grand Cru Van Paemel all came home on four and eight while anchor Emma O’Dwyer on HHS Figero returned four and four to total a 32 fault score and finish ninth.

A victorious Ireland took Gold on a five fault total. Michael G Duffy (Felix XXVIII) jumped for clear and one fault, Matt Garrigan (Contino 56) returned clear and four, Max O’Reilly Hyland (Ahmed Du Calvaire) posted cleatr and eight and Gavin Harley (Understone Van De Kapel) scored seven and clear.

The Netherlands took Silver on 10 faults with Switzerland in Bronze on 13.
