Brits took the top two in the 1.45m speed at the Longines Global Champions tour in Cascais – and they are both going to Rio! Ben Maher had the upper hand over his teammate John Whitaker to the take spoils.

A high-class field of 33 tackled Frank Rothenberger’s track, and Ben set an early – and unbeatable target from fourth draw. He rode the Andiamo/Flamenco De Semilly 12-year-old Aristo Z into the top spot 0.77 sec with ease. Nearest rival was John in second with Old Lodge’s Cassini II 12-year-old Lord of Arabia.

Alexandra Thornton eased Caballero into fifth with Scott Brash and the Indoctro mare Constance in seventh.

John and Ben also featured in Friday evening’s 1.50/1.55m, John and his Rio Olympics ride, Team Harmony’s Ornellaia, taking fourth almost three sec ahead of Ben on Sarena. Scott and Hello Forever were also in the final shake-up, but four faults in the eight-strong jump-off dropped them to seventh. Laura Renwick on Bintang and Michael Whitaker with his Rio ride Cassionato both had four faults for 17th and 18th.
