Michael Duffy takes the Keysoe grand prix

July 7, 2016

British-based Irishman Michael Duffy was in flying form at Keysoe International, taking his second 2* grand prix in a month with Alan Burnell’s Belcanto Z, a Berlin/Mr Blue 10-year-old.  The pair, who claimed their first grand prix win at Allington at their very first outing, showed it was no fluke here, winning by 1.29 sec.

Britain’s Jake Saywell and Grand Cru Van Paemel did their utmost to deny Michael victory, posting the fastest time of the class, quicker by 1.15 sec, but a rail hitting the floor dropped them to fifth.

Holly Smith (nee Gillott) – a double winner the previous day – took second on the rish-bred, Beach Ball eight-year-old Lammy Beach, with Chloe Winchester on the Sydney/Guidam 11-year-old Synique in third.

Chelsea Skelton – a double winner on day one – rounded off her successful show with a win in the concluding 1.35m speed on the Balou Du Rouet/Kanudos 10-year-old Millfield Baloney.  They took victory by 0.67 sec.  Jay Halim galloped the Unistar/Zeus 11-year-old Abrisco into second with Simon Crippen aboard the 11-year-old Pennsylvania/Pachat II mare Atlanta VIII in third.

Lily Freeman-Attwood, who has enjoyed children-on-horses success with Topspin, guided the nine-year-old mare into victory in the 74-strong 1.25m two-phase, winning by 0.17 sec.

Nick Benterman took second on the Andiamo 11-year-old Adico with third going to Harrison Hattea on Darko Supreme, an 11-year-old by Mr Darcy and out of a Carnaval Drum mare.

Tara McDonald claimed the six-year-old final with Fygo Von D’Ouwe Grint, an Indoctro/Pierrot gelding she has qualified for the RIHS winter novice championship at Hickstead later this month.  The partnership has been on form from the beginning of the year, gaining Hickstead qualification before gaining plenty of experience on the Spanish sunshine tour in Vejer.

Russia’s Anastasia Gamazova took second with Faith III, just 0.01 sec ahead of Jake Saywell and the impressive Quidam B Z stallion Quimari W in the six-strong jump-off.

Rachel Burr took the five-year-old with 0.19 sec to spare on the Ukato/Goodtimes gelding Gaudi.  Dan Moseley eased Berdenn De Kegane, the Hales family’s Quaprice Boimargot Quincy/Flipper D’Elle stallion, into second.  Nicole Pavitt was third on another stallion with Hales family connections – Newtonhill Monaco is by their great stallion Arko and out of a Corrado II mare.

Rachel Horton proved unbeatable in the 1.15m.  After yesterday’s one-two, she again claimed the top spot on the final day with Quidelle Du Reverdy.  It was no fluke, Rachel took the top spot by just 0.06 from the speedy pairing of Helen Rees and the 14-year-old Maximo Des Forets.  Day one’s 1.10m winner Chelsea Skelton with Cheleko GB Z was third.
