Annabel Shields takes the big class at the Charles Stanley British Masters

Annabel Shields secured the top spot in day one’s feature class, the world ranking 1.45m, at the Charles Stanley British Masters, Wettenhall 2*, taking the win by 0.56 sec on Wet Wet Wet, a 13-year-old gelding by Mr Blue.

"He never fails to please," said Annabel.

Cheshire-based Irishman Anthony Condon eased Kat Taylor’s 10-year-old Oklund gelding Balzac into second, with third going to Mark Edwards and his home-bred 10-year-old Tinkers Tale.  Laura Robinson and Jonti took fourth with Rebecca Marsh and Venus III fifth and Steven Franks on Brutus III sixth.

Paul Barker triumphed in the 1.40m, winnng by just over a sec on Spring Equestrian Partnership’s Happy Boy, a Kannan/Kimball nine-year-old. 

A field of 48 contended the class, with Nigel Coupe and the 12-year-old Jubilee III taking second.  Ireland’s Dermott Lennon took third on Fleur IV – a Chatman 11-year-old originally produced in Britain by Jude Burgess – and fellow Irishman David Simpson finished fourth with his HOYS 2016 Foxhunter finalist Keoki.  Leonie Aitkenhead was fifth on Clane K with sixth going to Dan Neilson on Major Delacour.

A flying round by Jamie Wingrove and the speedy Zilfa Heleen, a Nobility/No Limit 12-year-old mare, commandingly took the opening 1.30m by 1.30 sec. 

Lance Whitehouse pushed the Cartano/Topas nine-year-old Cartino III into second, just ahead of Mark Edwards with Sam Thomas’ Unbelievable Darco/Jalisco B 10-year-old Unbelievable Eddie.

Only half a sec separated those placed second to sixth, with George Whitaker taking fourth on Willetton. Ireland’s Shane Breen was fifth on Guidam Van Het Achterhoek with Sally Hopkinson sixth on Cartouche.

Ian Wynne topped the amateur 1.20m with his seasoned campaigner Demonstrator 16-year-old Don Douglas. They proved just 0.11 sec faster than Morgan Carpenter in second on the Burggraaf nine-year-old Merllyns Mirage. Third was awarded to Sally Swiers and Millfield Longsocks.

Martha Newall and the Landor S 11-year-old Ashton Landorina, bred in Scotland by the Turnbull family, headed the amateur 1.10m by 1.59 sec from Angel Tough on the Cassini II nine-year-old Callumbus. Morgan was third on the Harlequin Du Carel/Cruising six-year-old Merllyns Harlequin.
