Kellie Taylor and Paul Kennedy take the HOYS newcomer places at Weston Lawns

Kellie Taylor and Paul Kennedy secured the HOYS tickets in the Connolly’s RED MILLS newcomer second round at Weston Lawns.

A large field of 104 initially contended the class, with 24 reaching round two after jumping Steve Williams’ 13-fence track cleanly. Round two competitors had to contend with rolling thunder, and the jump-off was delayed by 30 minutes until the heavy storm eased.

Only seven gained jump-off access, with Paul setting the standard on Dave Quigley’s Destiny Second Life Z, a six-year-old mare with Diamant De Semilly/Cassini I bloodlines.

Kellie, who last jumped at HOYS in the pony newcomer final on Amber Minor three years ago, used the penultimate round to slice 2.88 sec off the time on Halltown Lucy to take the class.

“I managed to avoid the rain, a good job as she didn’t like the puddles,” said Kellie, 18, who took over the ride on the Ars Vivendi six-year-old from twin sister Abbie in January.

“I can’t thank Abbie for letting me ride her while she’s away. Lucy’s a keeper, we’ve had customers asking about her, but she’s staying!”

Irishman Paul, 22, who joined Sharon and Dave Quigley nine months ago at their Cheshire base, took second on the Ars Vivendi six-year-old Destiny to register his first visit to HOYS.

“Sharon and Dave have given me a fantastic opportunity, I can’t thank them enough,”said Paul, who found the track – especially the final round – “Very big and very competitive.

Ian Maye produced the only other treble clear for third on Millfield Figaro. He missed out on HOYS by 2.51 sec, but gains a place and another qualifying chance in the HOYS Masters at the National Championships, Stoneleigh. Joining him is fourth-placed Aimee Jones on Ultravox and Joe Clayton, in fifth on Lexi III.
