Nicole Lockhead Anderson enjoys a bumper weekend at South View
Nicole Lockhead Anderson had a show to remember at South View pony premier, taking four HOYS tickets in the pony showjumper of the year, newcomers and Foxhunter.
She landed the Blue Chip pony newcomers second round in a mammoth 98-strong class with Gangnam Style II, an Irish-bres seven-year-old she acquired 18 months ago.
Only 15 gained initial clears with 11 going forward into the jump-off,Nicole taking an assertive victory by an impressive 3.07 sec.
Madison Jamison eased the Verdi/Heartbreaker six-year-old Flavia into second with Archie Ray and Tower Hamlets just missing out on HOYS in third. However, he gets another qualifying chance at Stoneleigh’s National Championships, and is joined by fourth-placed Emma Crawford on Mullingar Bay and Fraser Reed, in fifth on Jiminy Cricket.
Nicole and Gangnam Style also claimed a finalist place in the Squibb Group pony Foxhunter second round, taking second to Lottie Tutt and Helen Tredwell’s home-bred Kanclaudius.
With three HOYS tickets on offer, 55 competitors chased hard, but only five reached the jump-off following an initial 15 clears. And Lottie was the sole rider to leave all the fences up in the jump-off, taking victory with the only treble clear on the six-year-old Kanclaudius.
This mare – by Robert Smith’s former top International ride Marus Claudius – is out of former grade A mare Kantara V H, an Elanville daughter jumped by Helen. But Kanclaudius didn’t grow and although she originally started in senior British novice and discovery last year with Helen, she was switched to pony classes in 2016 because of her petite size.
Joe Fernyhough netted the third qualifying spot on Wildwood Silver, a Silver Shadow sired 10-year-old who finished second in the HOYS pony newcomers last year with Jess Hewitt.
Picking up Foxhunter Master places at the National Championships are Madison Jamison on Sweepstake and Fraser Reed with Jiminy Cricket.
Nicole’s third HOYS ticket came in the pony showjumper of the year. The 20-year-old rish-bred Cappagh Supreme bagged second with a double clear. It was no mean feat, only six reached the jump-off from 39 starters, and three double clears filled the three qualifying places.
The win belonged to the on-form Emma Crawford and the 19-year-old Moonlight Flight, another Irish-bred, taking the class by almost three sec. It gives Emma two cracks at the final – she also won at Weston Lawns on Stars Surprise.
Sophie Bowen Howard claimed the final HOYS pass in third on the Dover/Calypso I 6-year-old Dafina K.
Nicole’s bumper weekend continued with a fourth HOYS pass in The Stable Company 138cm, taking second on the 18-year-old Shappen Pilgrim.
It was a tough course. Only nine first round clears from 64 starters were found, with eight going forward to the jump-off. And only one treble clear was produced, Shaunie Greig and the 15-year-old Drumaclan Flight taking a commanding victory. Shaunie also claimed the third qualifying spot with the 12-year-old mare Buttons Two, sandwiching Nicole into second – both falling victim to the first element of the double.
Hannah Barker booked her NEC, Birmingham place with victory in the HOYS 128cm on the 18-year-old mare My Little Sweetheart. They galloped home with in the opening draw of the six-strong jump-off to win by 0.87 sec.
Natasha Hamilton took second with the only other treble clear on Koda, a 17-year-old who won at HOYS in 2015 with Lily Grimwade in the saddle.
Iwan Carpenter took third with Brookhall Glimpse, but as this pair had already qualified at Sparsholt, the HOYS place was passed down.
Therefore, fourth and third qualifier was claimed by another former winner. Mathews Girl takes Alena Hughes – eighth last year – to have another crack at final. The 22-year-old mare claimed victory in 2013 with Sienna Charles, 2012 with Scarlett Charles and 2008 with Millie Allen.
Kelly Wecke doubled up with 80cm and 90cm wins on Smudge, and Anneliese Aitken topped the 1.05m on Dun The Business III from Tabitha Kyle in second on Carnaween Laura.
Sarah Mackmin headed the JC/JA handicap on Hot Shot Bacardi with Georgia Taylor-Jones and Zambarra in second, and Molly Bennett took the Direct Insurance Group Bright Star on Little Miss Mayhem with Isla Kerr and Smarty Pants VI in second.
Megan Taylor triumphed in the 1.10m on Bojangles II from second-placed Daisy McKinlay and Cranford Jack. Natasha Hamilton claimed victory in Saturday’s Graham Heath Construction primary handicap from Ella Derbyshire on Thelma’s Gift, and Sophia Lugo won Sunday’s equivalent with Cheeky Chap and Jake Gibson claimed second on Llettycrudd Cardi Bach.
