Rob Maguire takes the HOYS talentseekers top spot

Great jumping, brilliant sunshine and a marquee with good food and a beer tent – what more could you ask for? Northcote Stud’s young horse show was hailed a great success.

Rob Maguire will return to HOYS on his reigning Foxhunter champion Anastasia Van De Helle after heading the HOYS talentseekers.

From a field of 68, Raf Suarez cleverly used distance questions to achieve 13 for the jump-off, with Rob claiming an early lead.

“I’d considered turning inside to the [penultimate] vertical, but Raf [Suarez, course-designer] said I didn’t need to - I had a bit of ‘inside assistance!’, so I made up the time early on in the course,” he said.

Rob has owned the Acolord/Capitol I nine-year-old Anastasia since she was six, but she missed her seven-year-old year and is still playing catch up.

“This year is just an experience year, she’s upped a level and needs this year to feel comfortable. She jumped in Spain, was placed at Balmoral in a big class and the grand prix and jumped Warrington’s area trial. Next year she’ll be a more finished article,” he said.

Paul Bevan took second on the big-jumping and ultra-consistent Dutch-bred eight-year-old Deangelo, who already claimed qualification at Addington.

Claire Gradley netted third and the top seven-year-old spot with John and Laura Renwick’s Top Dollar.

“He’s not the fastest as he lacks experience, but he’ll jump the biggest fence. Now I’ve got the bridle right I feel so confident on him and he’s improving all the time,” said Claire on the Dollar Du Maurier gelding who is now for sale.

Donald Whitaker took fourth and a HOYS place with Anne Bedford’s promising Billy Z.

“He’s just stepped up and he’s feeling very good,” said Donald, who has high hopes for the Burggraaf/Lux Z eight-year-old who is out of Remi Delux - a mare jumping here with Morgan Kent.

Mennell Watson claimed the final qualifying place in fifth with Helen van Heyningen’s home-bred Cobretti eight-year-old stallion Whisper In The Wind.

Laura Stephenson topped the 1.40m on Catherston Connor with quick decisive turns and a galloping finish.

The excitable Cevin Z 13-year-old was bought six years ago from a showing yard.

“Showing wasn’t his forte, they were at their wits end and he’d never seen a pole on the floor before. He was hard work – and can still be hard work – but he tries so hard for a little 15.2hh,” said Laura, who is steadily moving him up a level.

“I like to drop my horses down for a sweetener and keep them level in their heads – and to last a long time,” said Laura, who contended the HOYS 2012 grade C final on this grey.

Pippa Allen took second with Hope Springs and Morgan Kent claimed third on Remi Delux.

Graham Babes took the initial 1.30m on Boucheron from Paul Bevan’s Deangelo with Lauren Edwards in third on Bukato.

James Smith was a winner in Friday’s 1.30m on Parkhill Legacy, taking the win by 0.28 sec from David Harland and Nux D’Amour.

Matt Sampson eased Ivory Ter Doorn into the top spot in the Tough Sport Horse speed championship, winning by 1.71 sec. Rose-Marie Kenyon took second with Declan Irvine third on Keeford Carousel.

Claire Shepherd topped Thursday’s Foxhunter on Jordanta with Claire Gradley’s Super Model in second. Declan Irvine claimed the 1.20m with Keeford Carousel with Rachael Connor and Lottie taking second.

And Rachael headed two newcomer classes with B Valeree. Pippa Goddard took second on Chellimo TW in the first newcomers, with Lauren Edwards on Expresso 99 second on Friday.

Rachael was again second on Lottie III in Friday’s Foxhunter/1.20m, won by Lara Whiteway on Cocos Moon River.

Louise Clibburn claimed victory in the 1.10m on Grays Delfado VDL with Jeanette Powell in second on Flacao.

Harry Bateman doubled up in the discovery on Heerledon. On day one, he pushed Caroline Paxton and Antoniio VP Wisbecq into second. On day two, he claimed the top three places with Heerledon, Havanna and Anvils Every Little Helps II.
