Billy Twomey and Diaghilev win the Hamburg Derby
Ireland’s Billy Twomey landed the Hamburg Derby with Terry Payne’s home-bred Vangelis S 13-year-old Diaghilev. Billy was the first non-German rider to win the prestigious class in 19 years. The last foreigner to win was Hugo Simon.
Nigel Coupe and Sue Simmons’ former working hunter Golvers Hill, an Irish-bred 13-year-old by Richardo Z, took second.
In round one over the Derby track, a clear round was sadly missing, and nine four faulters jumped off for the top prize. Billy found the shortest route home, and Nigel was just one sec in arrears for second place.
William Whitaker took seventh on the Irish-bred 13-year-old Glenavadra Brilliant.
