John Whitaker and Bertram Allen team up for another win in the Global Champions League
Thumbs up for an unbeatable team! John Whitaker, 60, and Bertram Allen, 20, teamed up as Valkenswaard United to take the Global Champions League at Hamburg on a zero total. They beat the Antwerp Diamonds (Harrie Smoulders and Audrey Coulter), who were also on zero, by more than three sec.
John rode the Cassini/Cascavelle eight-year-old Cassinis Chaplin to provide a clean sheet, and Bertram followed suit with the 18-year-old stallion Romanov. This victory – their second after winning in Miami – puts Valkenswaard United at the top of the league after five legs on 130 points, 11 points ahead of nearest rivals the Monaco Aces.
William Whitaker secured 3* German Jumping Derby qualification in the second qualifier with second on the rish-bred Brilliant Lad 13-year-old Glenavadra Brilliant. Nigel Coupe and another Irish-bred 13-year-old, former working hunter Golvers Hill, were just a sec behind for third. Billy Twomey and Diaghilev took eight and Harriet Nuttall with A Touch Imperious finished 12th.
Four faults for John (Echo of Light) and Michael Whitaker (Cassionato) pushed them down the line in the 5* Baker Tilly Roelfs trophy, won by Belgium’s Pieter Devos on Espoir.
